Don Walters is an Australian sculptor, painter and graphic artist. His work has developed a strong personal aesthetic which is often based around the use of simple forms and geometric shapes. Repetition, layering, folding and stacking are common characteristics in most aspects of his work. The work of Don Walters is predominantly abstract but an underlying sense of the figure is always apparent. His totemic plywood constructions for example are conceived with the figure in mind. "My work is quite instinctive and I try not to premeditate the forms. But I'm always thinking about the object or the image as a figure, should it bend this way or that, is it tall enough to relate to as a figure, does it have a personality, basically does it feel alive." This attitude is also apparent in one of his most recent series which is based on humanist qualities explored through common objects (like scissors) which are rearranged and reinvented. Don has undertaken numerous public sculpture commissions. These large scale artworks in brightly coloured welded steel or reclaimed timber are characterized by the use of repeated structures, each one distinct, yet connected to a common narrative theme. Don has held solo exhibitions throughout Australia and has been included in numerous group exhibitions in Australia France and Italy. His work is included in various public collections. |
